A digital certificate encapsulates the public key of the system providing the certificate along with identity information (for example, the host name or organization). The entire set is signed using a digital signature algorithm by either a Certificate Authority (CA) or by the system itself creating a self-signed certificate.
The MCP supports standard X.509 v2 certificates. Digital certificates are used for authenticating server systems and clients (optional) over secure connections that use SSL/TLS.
