Tape volume security is implemented through a database that permits a usercode, security attributes, and other information to be associated with tape volume families.
| Note: | Tape volume security features require that either the Secure Access Control Module security-enhancement software or the Secure Accountability Facility security feature package is installed. |
A tape volume family can consist of a single tape volume—that is, a single reel of tape—or a group of tape volumes that share a common owner, volume name, and other attributes, and that have volume reels numbered in the sequence 1, 2, 3, and so forth.
With tape volume security, a user can own a tape, make it private so that other users cannot access it, or even attach to the tape a guard file that selectively enables others to access the tape.
When no security is enforced for tapes, tape volumes have no owners; that is, they have no usercode associated with them, and no security file attributes or guard files are associated with them.
