Security Value of the Log-On Procedure

Although the usercode is the basis for identification, it is not protected information. The usercode appears openly

  • On printer listings

  • At the time of log-on

  • When job and task information is returned

To protect system access, associate a password with the usercode. The password does not appear on listings or the terminal, and it is stored in a coded format.

Because of the security importance of the password, users must understand that they should never share their passwords with others.

Passwords should

  • Be difficult to guess

  • Be changed periodically

  • Not be written down

The accesscode is also unprotected. It is the accesscode password that protects the accesscode from unauthorized use. On systems where security is a concern, accesscodes should have accesscode passwords associated with them.
