Installing Eclipse

Follow these steps to complete the download and installation of Eclipse.

1. Using Internet Explorer, go to http://www.eclipse.org/.

2. Click Downloads in the navigation bar on the left.

3. Locate Download now: and click Eclipse SDK 3.1.

4. Choose a download site; then click Save and direct the file to C:\Eclipse2200Temp. The file is about 85 MB.

5. When the download is complete, check to see that you have one file in the temporary folder, C:\Eclipse2200Temp, named eclipse-SDK-3.1-win32.zip.

6. Unzip (extract) the Eclipse zip file you downloaded using the C:\ drive as the location. Be sure to check All files and Use folder names. This extraction creates the main folder C:\eclipse and several subfolders.

7. Create a shortcut on the desktop, Start menu, or taskbar to start Eclipse, pointing to C:\eclipse\eclipse.exe.

8. Double-check your JAVA_HOME environment variable. It should be set to C:\j2sdk1.4.2_xx. where xx is the stability level of the J2SE SDK you downloaded. This tells the Eclipse IDE which JVM to use for running the environment. See Setting and Checking Windows Environment Variables.

Eclipse and the Java SDK are now installed.

Note: To remove Eclipse, delete the c:\eclipse folder; Eclipse does not alter the system registry.
